Early Life of Dadi Janki

Even as a young girl, Dadi Janki displayed a strong spiritual inclination. She often accompanied her father in their horse-drawn carriage, sharing the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle with others. Her teenage years brought her into contact with Brahma Baba, the founder of the Brahma Kumaris organization. Despite family resistance, she was drawn to the group’s spiritual mission and its focus on the welfare of others.

At the age of 21, in 1937, she made the courageous decision to leave her arranged marriage and join the Om Mandli (later the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University), a bold step that would define her life’s trajectory. Under the guidance of Dada Lekhraj (Brahma Baba), the organization experienced significant growth, expanding from 120 to 400 devotees, predominantly women, between 1937 and 1951. This period also saw the organization’s relocation from Karachi, Pakistan, to Mount Abu, India, in 1950.

International Services

Dadi Janki’s influence extended far beyond India. In 1974, despite initial hesitations due to her unfamiliarity with the English language, she embarked on her first trip to London to establish spiritual services in the West. This act of faith led to the opening of the first Brahma Kumaris center in Europe and the subsequent expansion of the organization to over 8,500 centers in more than 130 countries globally. She traveled extensively, spreading her message of peace and spirituality across continents.
