Wiki/Biography/Career
Born on January 1, 1937, in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, Prakashi Tomar comes from an agricultural family. After marriage, she moved to Johri village in Bhagpat district. Her remarkable shooting career began at the age of 60, quite by chance.
While teaching her daughter Seema to shoot at the Johri Rifle Club, Prakashi’s own natural talent was discovered. Her first shot impressed the coach, who encouraged her to pursue the sport. Balancing household chores with training proved challenging. The coach accommodated her by allowing one weekly session at the range and encouraging home practice.
After two years of dedicated training, Prakashi competed against and defeated the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Delhi Police, Dheeraj Singh, a victory that garnered significant attention. She has since won approximately 25 national championships, including a gold medal at the Veteran Shooting Championship in Chennai. Her contributions extend beyond competition; she has inaugurated numerous shooting ranges in her village and surrounding areas.
She also mentors young people from nearby villages, sharing her expertise and encouraging their participation in the sport. In 2019, her life story, along with that of her sister-in-law, Chandro Tomar, was depicted in the film “Saand Ki Aankh,” starring Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar.
